75mm, 78a (what does the A stand for)

i no this is a really dumb question. i no the a stands for handness of the wheel. but is it the bigger number the harder the wheel or the smaller the number the harder the wheel?...
sorry for the dumb queston but its nice to know when shopping.

(for some reason) means "years" so older urethane
is harder. again, i could be wrong about all that..
but yeah, higher number is harder

i get what the dude means, higher number harder wheel, but what does the letter "a" stand for? is there any other letters like 78b? or 82c?
