Rist Free Ride Concerns

GI Joe posted,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but TimeShip Racing's
hopes of of hosting a World Record attempt in Rist
Canyon, Colorado have been greatly diminished by some
of the locals submitting an incomplete permit application.
This application had NO Traffic plan, NO safety / medical
plan, NO spectator plan and requested to shut down the
road for 2 days to allow for 165 participants. It was of
course DENIED by the Larimer County Review Board and
the Sheriffs Dept. without an appeal.

The Sheriffs Dept. were NOT impressed that the
applicants included a link to the YouTube video of K-
Rimes bombing the hill in excess of the posted speed
limit, and the prospect of spending the entire next
Summer chasing down " Extreme Sport Daredevils" that
threaten their peaceful Rocky Mtn. Community. They are
now on the Warpath to catch and prosecute any Skaters,
Lugers, even Bicyclists to make an example of them.
GREAT.

This set's back our efforts significantly, and puts TSR in
the uncomfortable position of risking our good reputation
from putting on the Nationals at Vail Pass, Colorado 2
years in a row without incident. It is MUCH more difficult
to work with a county Government than with the Forest
Service or the State. The County wants to hear how it will
benefit them and their businesses not how much fun it
will be for the riders! The State or Feds just wants us to
meet the requirements.

Why didn't the Soldiers of Speed contact TimeShip to ask
for our assistance in preparing a permit and the required
insurance (non-refundable in Colorado) as well as how
best to proceed with organizing such an important
opportunity? Now it is likely that we'll have to look to
2009 AFTER we prove to the County that we are able to
enter an agreement with the entire Downhill Race
Community to prohibit ANY riding on that hill until then.
Not too likely that we can keep the locals from it, and
opportunities like this don't pop up too often. The hill has
the potential, the question is do the locals have the
restraint to help make it happen?

TimeShip Racing is willing to continue to negotiate with
the County of Larimer, but only if everyone else can help
us make this happen by keeping OFF the hill. I feel for you
John Ozman, Danny's right the sport is going through
growing pains and we need to decide how much extra
pain and effort we are wiling to accept. Outlaw events are
fun, but the World Record is a landmark that matters to
alot of people.

Dalua was officially clocked at 114kph at Teutonia last year. If GWR accepts it, then the new record will stand at 114kph (70.68mph)
