Sheep’s Creek for Speed Freaks Weekend

unkle posted,

i found this the other day and thought I should put it up as a thanks to Strike.

Coastlongboarding’s 3rd Annual

May 30 – June 1 2008

Rumor had it that at the last Sheep’s Creek Outlaw, half of the racers that made the seven hour journey from the 49th parallel to Caribou Country in the Central Interior of BC were too terrified to compete after seeing the decent. The Chilcotin Plateau towers 1,000-plus metres over the mighty Fraser River. The Chilcotin Highway is the main East-West route in the province paved only for expediting the removal of timber from the region. Riders descend for 8km via a series of steep switchbacks and gnarly pavement. The absence of guard rails and stunning cliffs are enough to make even the most experienced riders nervous.

Our weekend begins by waiting to leave Vancouver; Striker our gracious host is late as usual but this time for good reason. He’s out fetching nine flats of beer from a sponsor Pilsner. In the Landyachtz “Eh Van” we hit the highway. At our first stop in Hope where we find a far from sober Coastlongboarding member “Tony Bagg oh Donuts” on the highway hitching. Later on Raggie and Strike stretch by literally dodging semi’s bombing a steep canyon using only the moon light to guide them.

We roll into Williams Lake that night on the cover of dark. The first locals we encounter were the Williams Lake Police. Thank god they didn’t pull us out! The soon to be Champ snoring away right through all the interrogations, to this day he doesn’t even realize he got the plastic gloves! We go hit three different night bombing spots out of sight. Later that night, Raggie sleeps outside wrapped up in his new Team Green poster.

Breakfast at the Dog and Suds then we ship out to Sheep Creek. On route, Strike tires our little legs with four pre-creek sessions. Cariboo Country bombs are long and burly with gravel patches they call pavement. After all is said and done, fifteen fearless Coastlongboarders line up to battle in front of a large liquored crowd. If you think Strike is well known on the Sunshine Coast, you should see him in his former hometown of Williams Lake. With the notorious Monkey Face Caves in the back ground, practice runs go great. Fifteen fearless Coastlongboarders line up; including Hardcore Harding, Skatie Katie and Hurricane Haven. In the semi-final Raggie and ‘guy who falls’ draft a big rig, barreling into the canyon. They think they are drafting but it’s more that the truck is sucking the trailing riders into the gap. Woody, Striker, Andrew of Ont. and Raggie advance to the final and Finish in that order.

After crushing some well deserved Vitamin P we head out to Chimney Lake for a BBQ and swimming. Thanks to Strikes family for all the delicious food! Stu pukes and the dog eats it.
We then continue down the lake to Red Shreds Board and Bike 20th Anniversary. An outdoor party, complete with hot tub, gigantic fire, live rock band and a water dock jump for Raggie and Hoodie to stay entertained with. It was Pilsner and gangst to the max. and Katie, Woody and Strike battle it out for last up Title of “who won the party” was left undecided and in the morning we find Woody the champ cuddled by the fire suckin' his thumb mumbling about all the things he’s going to do with his cash prize. Can’t wait till next year. Sheep’s Creek truly is what Coastlongboarding represents; good ‘ole fashion Canadian racing and hospitality. No frills and no whiners. Bombing yer local hills out runnin’ yer local cops.”
