sliding noob

hey all,
anyone have advice for locations and setups to learn to slide?
i really want to take this to the next level by learning to stop.
i'm looking around for an old deck with hard wheels to learn on because i have mostly very flexy long cruising boards.
i live in north van (soon to live downtown) and am not sure where would be a good place to start messing around.
so,
1) where?
2) tips?
3) gear?
4) anyone want to show me? :P

i learned to slide on a regular short board with bone
wheels.
i recommend getting the biggest short board you can
find, also, your gonna need slide gloves and pads.
its also easier to learn on wet roads if you do use
bigger, grippier wheels
