Painting an Evo

Hey all,
I'm planning on painting my evo over the winter, and I was just wondering if anybody with experience doing this would have any pointers?
ie sanding methods, types of paint, finishing with clearcoats.
Any tips I could get for this project would be awesome,

my buddy painted his like 2 times, it looked good both times, he just sanded till it was just wood, the painted, and sealed (clearcoat)

What kind of paints are best to use? spray paint or regular wood paint?
