What about the people that travel to go to races? Then if the spots fill up they traveled all that way and don't even get to race...

It's hard to budget a race when you are waiting for the last minute head count to run a race. Some races require lots of planning in advance and need to know how much money, resources, prizes, T-shirts, food and all the other stuff that they need to run a successful event.
When the races were small it didn't matter if it was last minute or not. Now it matters when you have close to 300 people sign-up for Danger Bay! Plus it doesn't help that we are in an economic pinch. More than ever we need head counts prior to the races.
