Roadrash on Tattoos?

I recently got a tattoo as a Christmas present, and I have been pretty worried about falling on it. It's on my left leg so it's pretty much exposed all the time when I skate (I live in Cali so pants are pretty much overkill this time of year). I was just wondering what some of you guys do to protect your tattoos and to what extent you can scrape em up without doing too much damage. Thanks in advance.
