Gone but NOT forgotten.

dt posted,

The following are some posts from friends and family. This thread is to honor the memory of my friend and mentor.

His influence touched many in the downhill community especially his teamates: Ricky Kludy, Reed Lowry, Jimmy Flindt, Danny Connor, Eli Smouse, and myself. Cliff Coleman and Manu Atuna were alway apart of the team when they were in town.

Gary loved sharing his passion for going fast with anyone else that was like minded.

Wether you rode a dregs board, a duck deck, a comet, or anything else with wheels on it. It was always about getting rad on a skateboard.

If anyone that knew him would like to share any stories or post any photos, please do so.

In the meantime, I will start with a bunch of old posts and pictures.

I've also pulled out his old signature board that he cast his mold off of. It will be set up with his trucks and wheels and tuned just the way he liked it.

I will be riding many of his favorite hills tomorrow afternoon from Oceanside to Vista to Temecula to Tuscany. I'll be leaving in the late morning / afternoon and riding through out the night. Many of these hills will be full moon and tail wind.

Anyone that knew him or share his passion is welcome to join me and take his board for a spin. The only catch is you will have to ride it the way he rode it, no adjusting the trucks. The front will be really loose and the back even looser.

RIP GARY HARDWICK
MAY YOU ALWAYS TRAVEL AT TERMINAL VELOCITY

In a non-skateboard related accident, Gary Hardwick died last night. He was a true asset and mentor to the downhill skateboarding world. He will be greatly missed. When more details are known, information about a ceremony will be posted.

I think we should throw some money together and send some flowers to the family. If anyone is close to them set up a paypal account. It would only take 5 dollars or so from 20 people and we could send some nice ones.

Gary,

First of all I want you to know that you are the reason I have advanced in this sport. Thank you for taking me under your wing and teaching me a higher level of riding. To you I dedicate my Gravity Gold because we both know it would have been a different story had you shown up this year. I love you with my whole heart and will miss you greatly until we meet on that special downhill run in the sky. Yes we will ride again and I will look forward to that day.

You have been a special friend to all who knew you and very respected in the skateboarding world. One of my lifetime dedications will be to make sure the world record is never taken from you. As long as I live your name will remain in the Guinness book because you truly are the fastest skateboarder who ever lived. No one will ever be able to take that from you!

With love & respect,

Wow,
I don't know what I can say that will even begin to express how I feel. There are just some people that come into your life and leave more of an impact that just about anything or anyone else you could experience. Gary was one of those people. He is one of the people that I owe a part of my life to. He made a pro downhill skateboarder out of a tall, skinny kid who liked to go too fast on his skateboard. Heroes aren't supposed to leave like this, not this early. I just can't believe it. Love and prayers to the Hardwick family. I can't even imagine what you guys are going through. Just know that the Lord is with us all and he is the only comfort at a time like this. God bless to everyone. I MISS YOU GARY!!!!!!!!!!

I too am saddend to hear the news about Gary H... a couple of GH memories will always be burned in my mind.

The first is of him spending time with my youngest son... giving him pointers on his tuck and stance, words of speedboarding encouragement, and then signing his helmet for him... I liked the guy ever since!

The second was of Gary pitching his board sideways at the bottom of Barrett... sliding about a hundred feet to a stop.

I always considered him to be a class act and I know that my son, who really looks up to Gary's skating abilities and kindness towards kids, will be sad and feel a loss... but he will treasure his downhill helmet even more... HR

Wow, I don't even know what to say, just found out. tears in my eyes and on my keyboard. I was lucky enough to be friends with Gary. I first met him ridding off road boards. we both rode for XT wheels for awhile. All the sessions at the TVS pool. and many other good times we shared, I am completly shocked..Gary was before his time. I watch him jump hills in Cardif, with toe clips going about 40-50mph, scared out of my mine everytime he did it, but even after gnarly slams he would get up and head back to the top, as we all stood there drinking coffee shaking our heads....Much love to Gary's family, my heart is with you all, as well as everyone else that Gary touched. I feel blessed that I had time with him here on earth. God bless you brother see you in the after.

Hello everyone! I am Proud to announce the official invitation to Gary Hardwick's Memorial party. In celebration of his life, his family and friends have prepared a special gathering to pay our final respect and show support for all who love him. This celebration will take place on Halloween at Gary's house in San Diego and ALL WHO KNEW HIM ARE INVITED. His girlfriend Jen has allowed tents to be set up in their large yard for anyone wishing to spend the night. NBC, Red Bull and Raging Nation have made a combined effort to produce all of Gary's video footage which will be shown that evening. You are all encouraged to share your video and photos as well as your thoughts about the impact Gary has had in your life. This will be a unique chance to meet many of Gary's family and childhood friends who grew up with him in the Carlsbad area. I strongly suggest that everyone show up and unite under this tragic loss of a great man.

Party begins at 12:00 noon and will last through the entire evening, 10-31-02.

Directions:
From the 5 fwy exit 78 east, left on Melrose, right on Bobier, left on San Luis Rey - 1615 San Luis Rey, Vista CA 92084.

Just thought I would echo Richie's thoughts on that GS race at west LA. I was a hand dragging slow poke on the GS, totally teched out on wheels decks and trucks but no good at racing. Up comes some guy with a guitar skateboard (beat to heck too) old ripped up trucks and some worn out wheels and he hops on this thing, without practice, and tore up the course. That moment showed me what real hill riding talent was and I was blown away. I also shot the breeze at Barret or Campo or Dump with him and he seemed like a good guy. Very sorry to hear the bad news.

IN MEMORY OF GARY HARDWICK

I don't know where to start. From Capt. Cokes to Black Sabbath. Skating the Vegas strip at 4 in the morning to learning how to silk screen over and over again. From the Jack in the Box card to aluminators coming apart, from skating Staples to always pouring oil into your old cars. Using pennies for spacers, to low rider bikes, 2 year old never cleaned bearings, sliding Tuscany in the rain, the old church road, to barret junction. I can go on and on...

It was Gary and Doc who introduced me to this sport, and Gary who showed me how to ride. I will miss those nights and early mornings before a race where Gary would be helping everyone dial in their boards and gear. He loved the races in every aspect, He was a true competitor and loved to win, but was just as happy being there with his family. He was great with kids and loved building boards and tweaking with new ideas. Most of all i will miss the times of just talking story in his garage, listening and playing music, and having a good time. Gary was and will always be RAD!!!!!!!!

He use to tell me when all the s#@! would hit the fan he would say one word. Dogggnuts! It was such a silly word it would make him laugh and stop focusing on what was going wrong.

I will never forget Gary you have been a inspiration in my life, a mentor, and a friend. I ve always considered you family, i know others have too.

I feel fortunate and honored to have known and raced with Gary. For as long as I've been racing, Gary has always been "the man to beat". He has the respect of his peers and a long list of friends that come from him being a super nice and down to earth guy.

My fondest memories of Gary will be of the times when we rode the hill at Barrett Junction together, a place where Gary thoroughly dominated. One day Rick Kludy and I were gettin' schooled by Gary. I kept falling in the hairpin turns and later on Gary joked "We're gonna have to quit here pretty soon, you guys are running out of leather...". Painfully true, and funny as all hell.

Gary loved riding on the edge. His trucks were always loose and he would just dive into turns where no one else would think a line was possible. He'd show us his hands when the run was over. They were shaking from the rush of adrenaline. "Yeah, that was seriously scary..." He liked being scared like that. Livin' on the edge.

Brent DeKeyser and I are comin' down to Vista tomorrow to meet with the others. I think we'll take the Fast Trek. Gary would like that.

p.s. Pictured above 6 Gary's, 2 Eli's, 1 Jen and 1 Chris, Seattle 2000.

I never really got the chance to meet Gary, but hearing about this loss, I tried to remember. I remembered going up to him and introducing myself at Barret, and remembering his big smile and side burns. He never gave it a second thought that I was some new street luge guy. He was happy just to meet a new face.

To all who have been touched by this loss, friends, family, fellow racers - I express my condolensces, and offer my support.

wow, it all seems so unreal when we lose someone as special as gary. he truly loved what he did as i truly loved shooting film with him. i worried him in the beginning fearing i would t-bone him with the street luge. he finally got used to me which allowed us to get some sweet footage. these were times i will tell my grandkids about. times i will surely miss bombing a hill next to him and him waving to camera at 50. i was always amazed at his abilities and rejoiced in his accomplishments. it is bittersweet as i sit here editing the piece together for tomorrow. times like this make you think of those around you and how they could be gone tomorrow. make everyday count and dont take anyone for granted. put your trust in the God that made you and do it all for Him. i hope i'll be able to see you all tomorrow.

I think that your idea of the Gary Hardwick trophy is noble but I would like to see those that participated with Gary be the recipeints of it(Downhillers) Giving to Slalom guys just doesnt seem right, Nothing against Rich C or Brian P but why not keep it in the family, call me shortsighted if you will but I just think those that spent so many years with him and will learn from him are those that raced with him.

peace

Very sorry to here about this - It was really good to meet him in Scotland last year, what a great guy.

My deepest sympathy goes out to his family at this time.

I am sure that all the UK skaters who spoke to him in Scotland feel the same way.

He will be missed.

Just heard About Gary yesterday and I can truly say that Jon warburton,Steve Mobbs and Myself are Shocked to say the least.

I wasn't close friend of his or anything but all I can think of is in Switzerland a few years ago I was feeling well outta my league on arrival and one of the first people I met was Gary, he made me feel confident in my skills of downhillin'

He was an all round true skater and good guy.

The General Public needs to see his jumps at 50mph with skyhooks to understand what a remarkable skater he was.

I thought of Gary as one of lives people that was an inspiration regardless of what he was doing, if he was a footballer I am sure he would have been world class, just one of those naturally gifted people that radiated style
and flair effortlessly.

I find it hard to deal with something like this which happened out side of my life and on the other side of the world but still I am feeling it, We all are, I think anyone who has met GH will be feeling the same which stands as
a tribute to what a great person he was..

My thoughts go out to all Garys Close Friends and family from all the way over here in the UK.

does anyone know if there is a Paypal acc to send donations to?

Respect forever...

Darren Rathbone

i am in aw over gary and have not been able to say how I feel. I have so many storys to tell of races i have been to with gary. He is and always will be a champon in so many ways . I recall so many races that we where at and he always calmed me down.It is very hard to say goodby to a man that had so much life in him and shared it freely. Gary is very much apart of my life and my riding style that to know gary is to see the young riders coming in to the sport.I say good by my freind and may you alway be with me on all the hills i run from this day on !I miss you very much and please be with me in the days to come .Sometimes it is hard to say goodby and for some it is harder then other. Things happen and we need to move on !Gary would like that !!!!!!!!!!!

i ..... pressed return by mistake
I have logged on to this site for the first time in quite a while after hearing of Gary's death, hoping to find out more. I met gary 5 times in 5 different countries and he proved himself to be a fantastic person and clearly the greatest rider of all. this was a man who truly lead by example. I am sorry to have to disagree with you Mark (Golter)but i know for sure that what Gary wanted was for everyone to go faster and to break down their own limits. I spoke with Gary about the world record, and i know that he looked forward to his record being broken because that would mean he had succeeded in elevating everyone else. That is what he was about. I know that breaking his record is the greatest tribute he could have wished for, the next best thing being to go out and break your own record.break down your limits, destroy your preconceptions.
I also feel he would have been dismayed to see the drag v tech argument still going. He told me of how he had been a pure speed merchant until he saw the new wave coming, then knuckled down to learn the tech, but he always believed there was room for both in the big picture. Gary was the master of both, and isnt that the mark of a true great?
Gary, you will be sorely missed.
