what could be better then a weekend camping in the
jungle in hawaii? well, throw in a fresh paved one way
road and 50 killer longboarders throwing down trick after
trick with nothing to bother them except the eventual
sunset.
day one was a blur of hardwheel slides and big crashes as
everyone was giving it their all to make it through to the
second day on top. after getting down to 2 finalists in the
hardwheel comp, we switched to softwheel and and got to
see the likes of pono ashlock, justin lono, and the man
himself darryl freeman throwing down slides longer then
the lineup for beer at the monster trucks!! all in all day
one was a huge success.
with hardwheel down to the finals and softwheel down to
the top 8. the sun was setting as we gathered with bbq
and beers to watch the days footage.
just when you thought the day was through, mackenzie
piped up for the long sliders to get ready, so we set up
lights to skate into the night on our private skate road.
up first were the girls showing us all how the ladies rip in
hawaii. good to see all the support for the ladies. and
great to see them ripping it up. after crowning lisa as the
queen of the weekend we moved onto the longest slide.
competition was stiff and the mark kept getting pushed
back one board length at a time until finally it could not
be passed anymore. we had a champ. time to sleep!!
day 2 was hotter then the first, making it hard to trek
back up the hill after each run. but up early and eager to
skate, dylan and myself stretched and chatted as the
crowd gathered for the hardwheel finals. usually i don't
like to lose but this 16 year old was shredding like
nobodies business and i gladly handed him the win!
whew, now that thats over, and i'm covered in road rash,
it was time to move onto the softwheels on the other side
of the hill. what can i say about pono, justin, darryl, and
nikko. they killed the s turn and deserved the podium.
pono showing everyone how maui does it, spinning and
slashing all the way down. darryl sliding so fluid it looked
like he was surfing, justin throwing down huge drifts and
180s, and nikko reminding everyone that shredding the
gar is still the fastest way from point a to point b.
everyone was stoked and best part was we didn't get
hassled by the authorities. thank you mackenzie and all
the sponsors for making an amazing event go off without
a hitch. keep throwing events like this and hawaii will be
famous for more then just sand, sun, and surf.
much mahalo.
