Tips for learning to slide

Hey guys, i'm at a fairly beginner stage and i'm trying to learn how to slide and I was wondering if anyone had any tips ?
I mainly want to learn how to slide to a stop so that I have a means of stopping should I ever have to stop quickly well bombing a hill.

Thanks for the tip.
I can do toeside slides now. I've been having fun trying them out on the small pyramid at my local skatepark.
I'm still trouble having trouble with heelside slides(I think it's a Coleman slide i'm trying to do but i'm not sure if thats the correct term) It's the slide most frequently used for stopping that i'm referring to. Everytime I have trouble getting into a slide and usually fall backwards onto my ass. I'm sorry thats the best way I could think of to explain it.
