Coastlongboarding British Columbia presents (C.L.B.C)

Attack of Bear Bay II

A call to Coastlong boarders in British Columbia:

Vancouver, BC

It is time to attack the hills on the beautiful sunshine coast within Pender Harbour.

Because of the overwhelming response from the Pender Harbour community (especially the young rockers) and the downhill racers, we were asked to come back and host another Pender Harbour May day race (big crowds) ...and race we will

May 16 – 19 2003

Last years winners were:

1st - Jody Wilcox – Pro Rider from Kimberley BC -CAN

Last Year Review

Friday

Last year was nuts as we started early on Friday by cruising many of the numerous hills throughout Pender Harbour, which provided for spills, chills and laughs. After the hill bombs we relaxed with a dinner at the Garden Bay pub in Pender Harbour. Soon after, we set up our tents in Lions Park campground, which is an isolated camping ground, and rocked out to tunes, bonfires and stunts galore. Some stunts had riders jumping over cars on their mountain boards, jumping burning barrels – yes fire extinguishers were present – and filming of the event until 5am. Many people started the festival’s first night without getting shut eye!

Saturday

Pender Harbour’s annual May Day Parade! Beer gardens packed with people, local vendors, carnival games and a big parade where all Attack of Bear Bay participants get to march. Last year it was the LandYachtz camouflaged army truck full of boards and riders that made for the parade float. Cruising along with the truck we had pro riders doing style moves for the crowds while people marching were waving the event flag and yelling about the race the next day. It was the highlight of the parade for sure.

Sunday - Race Day

We raced early ....to early. This year we’ll have an 11 am start instead of last years attempted 9am start. A few injuries from last year included Danny Farmery’s broken wrist, myself – Bricin - a dislocated shoulder, Aaron Pass - off the pump - broken collarbone and one Hacky Sack injury, Shane - the camera man – Brownell was rushed to the hospital by ambulance with a dislocated shoulder. The race itself had almost all of the local residents lining the hill for the complete duration of the race. They provided for

the very loud cheering, screaming and grimacing when the riders took a spill.

When the race wrapped up around 4pm we all headed back to Lions Park, packed our tents and headed to Egmont for the wrap up festivities and the biggest party night of the weekend.

We rented the community hall and packed it to capacity as SIDESIXTYSEVEN headlined the evening and rocked the house in epileptic proportions with their fast and furious punk rock along with Not Quite Sober’s blend of old school and new school punk rock. Local DJ Jessie Pacman started the night by providing some excellent beats and grooves. After the hall we went to chyannes camp ground in the Egmont wilderness (across the way from the hall). We had the bon fire burning all night while bongo drums, didgery doos, fire spinning and good old times were the entertainment .

Sponsors

The sponsors were awesome with their support and all together we gave out 3 and a half garbage bags off free shwag. What I found most rewarding was giving out free longboards to the local sunshine coast future riders. Skull Skates, Dead Guys, Landyachtz and sector 9 were all major sponsors of the event and with out them it wouldn’t be possible. Red Shreds, the mountain folks in Williams Lake, also contributed with killer hoodies & shirts while psm clothing provided lots of street wear.

Thanks again.

Attack of bear bay was a complete success last year so get entered in the race early this year or just come out for the cruise and the atmosphere because you will be guaranteed to remember it for the rest of your days. The entire weekend there were events happening one after another making it a one of a kind non-stop party race weekend. And if you think you can beat Jody Wilcox (last year champ) or Louise Leslie (first woman bomber in the mens class) prove it in front of the Pender Harbour folks because they’re hungry to see the action.

Ride while you can.....

(with a full face helmet, hey logan)
