2010 DANGER BAY SLIDE COMP RESULTS

K-Rimes posted,

The 2010 Slide Competition was the best I have seen to
date as far technical sliding, and especially, soft wheel
sliding goes.

I ended up being the first person to show up at the slide
hill this year with Fernando and Dalua in tow. Fernando
wanted to get a few early drops on the hill so he could
dial in his runs and know his tricks and the pavement
sooner than anyone else. He was up at 5:40am being as
nervous as could be for the slide comp, but knowing he
would be doing his best. Fernando was in the end, one of
the two I would be considering for 1st place in the hard
wheel slide competition.

Fernando was out doing his first runs when Bricin rolled
over the hill in the Uhaul full of hay. I was a bit worried
actually that he had FINALLY decided to go with a new
location and figured we had missed out on it as we hadn't
stopped by the campsite. Bricin had asked if we should go
with the hay on the road and I told him my honest opinion
was no. Every time there's hay along the sides, inevitably,
the road gets narrower, hay gets scattered, and people
lazily sit on the hay with their legs on the road, further
narrowing things. Bricin was worried about people's
ankles but it all worked on in the end. I think without the
hay, people realized they were at great risk and paid more
attention to the sliding at hand. Heavy stuff indeed. Bricin
called me over and asked that I judge the slide
competition. I had decided I wouldn't be sliding for the
first time in 4 years and would only go with the downhill
this year and judging was honestly what I had hoped I
would be able to do at the slide comp.

The slide competition commenced in "Jam" Format where
all the sliders were self-organized. They would walk to
the top, look at each other, and sort of decide how they
would run. Letting some people go ahead and rip fast
runs, others letting the slow go ahead and RIPPING past
them with their faster single slides. After much
consideration of what the crowd was enjoying, and
speaking with other riders about how it was to be judged.
I decided that this year it would not be judged on
complete runs (although that was taken into
consideration) but instead it would be judged on what
were the gnarliest, fastest, craziest, most progressive
tricks that were thrown down over the course of the
event. I wanted to reward those who used the whole road,
used the jump (that Chilliwack provided), and those who
had a biiiig bag of tricks. What I wrote down on my sheet
of paper (which I hope to scan this week and put up in this
thread) was each person's best trick that they busted out.
Things that stood out in my eyes. Things that made the
crowd go wild. Things that I could refer to later to
remember their style or how they rode. I wanted to
remember what were the gnarliest tricks I saw, and
everyone had one or two things that they were doing
better than another person or that really popped as their
best trick.

As I said earlier, this was BY FAR the hardest competition
to judge. There were four different classes that I had to
judge, and those were the: Hard Wheel, Soft Wheel,
Women's, and The Air. They were all very different and
honestly, to me, I would have preferred to have them split
up and rewarded fully separately, however that is not the
way of Danger Bay and thus, it was run as a 1,2,3 of both
hard and soft together, and a Women's champion.

To let the results out, they were:

Women:

The women were nearly the hardest to judge over the
men because there were fewer riders and they were all
quite fairly matched.

For Reine's commitment to sliding and pulling clean tricks
and for Miku's style and new tricks from the last time I
saw her, I feel that they should TIE for THIRD PLACE AT
THE ATTACK OF DANGER BAY SLIDE COMP.

For Christin's standup slides, attempt at the ramp, and
three sixties, she deserves a VERY solid SECOND PLACE AT
AT THE ATTACK OF BEAR BAY SLIDE COMP.

The major stand out in the women for her speed, style,
and challenging tricks and for being one of the most
practiced and dialed of the day, I feel that JESSICA
CORCHIA OF NEW YORK deserves FIRST PLACE IN THE
WOMEN'S ATTACK OF DANGER BAY SLIDE COMP. Jessica
was pulling off some knee down nose manual slides,
sergio slides, and other clean tricks. The only thing she
needs to change to dial it in, is to STOP GRABBING
STINKBUG!

The men's... Holy samoleons. What a bunch of class acts.
This was the hardest of all to judge because I had to
combine the soft and the hard and decide how to jude
them. It was extremely challenging but after some time
speaking with Striker, it was all fully organized and dialed
in.

These are the decisions that I came up with.

ATTACK OF BEAR BAY SLIDE COMP RESULTS, MEN'S:

3RD PLACE:

GRAEME HYSTAD (BADNER)

Graeme was destroying all day. He came out and started
off with some fresh 180s and nice styles. He RARELY put
his hand down to correct his stand up slides. His style was
consistent, locked in, and dialed in. He started hitting the
ramp later on and laid down some very nice maneuvers
including a backside 180˚ off the ramp with good speed.
His final trick that was a contender for best trick was the
boardslide with both wheels locked on either side of the
ramp and launching off the top. This, along with his high
speed toeside 180s, clean 180-180 (360s), and
consistent, but progressive style earned him an overall
THIRD PLACE in the ATTACK OF BEAR BAY SLIDE COMP.

2ND PLACE:

FERNANDO YUPPIE

Fernando was on fire the whole morning from when he
first showed up, all the way till the end of the slide
competition. He was consistent, he had beautiful flowing
style from trick to trick, and laid down some VERY
technical maneuvers including a Switch Nose Blunt 540˚,
Nose Blunt 180˚ to switch, and even according to him a
Nose Blunt 1 wheel slide. His 720˚ to big spin was another
trick that stood out to me this year, however, it was also
the exact same trick that stood out last year. I am a big
fan of Fernando as he's so young and has such consistent
tricks and style. It's as though he's been sliding since he
was 5! (it's true). Fernando ALSO was one of the very few
people who was incorporating the jump into his slide
runs. In fact, he was the one who had the LARGEST of
height off of the jump. For Fernando, most people as well
as myself noticed that nearly every trick he did was
backside such as backside 360s, backside nose blunts,
backside, backside, backside. Very sick stuff, but most of
his runs to the average viewer could be seen as relatively
the same. For a slide competition in Brasil, Fernando
would be heavily rewarded for keeping his consistent
speed, landing every run, and having it so dialed that it
seems easy. For this Fernando Yuppie has earned a huge
honour at the ATTACK OF BEAR BAY SLIDE COMP, and that
is SECOND PLACE.

FIRST PLACE 1st FIRST PLACE:

KYLE "STYLE" MARTIN

"Style". What more can I say... The man is progressive. He
is throwing down faster, gnarlier, crazier, MEANER tricks.
Everyone would scream when he would throw down his
fastest tricks. The reason for this... They are downright
dangerous. Sixty foot long One Foot Tail Blunt Slides,
followed by a shuvit just for style. Switch 360˚ standup
slides (meaning he LANDS in switch). He would stall out
the rotation and would really pull on them. He landed a
full on BONELESS off the ramp which was fully flared. He
didn't land every trick he threw down... But everyone
crashed at the competition. With the way I decided to
judge the competition, Kyle's tricks and speed were really
what impressed me. He pulled off things that nobody in
the world really can do, and at speeds that make even
seasoned downhillers shudder, much less hard wheelers.
In my opinion, Kyle would have won best trick for his ONE
FOOT BLUNT NOSE GRAB SHUVIT OUT. After years of 2nd
place or tying, Kyle really deserved to fully win it this year.
His commitment to progressing hard wheel sliding and
downhill skateboarding is incredible and he is fully
deserving of this win this year. Kyle, you are pushing the
level of all of us, and showing what is possible on a
skateboard... For this, YOU ARE THE ATTACK OF BEAR BAY
SLIDE COMP CHAMPION!!!!

Thank you to all who attended and killed it. It was
fantastic to see everyone skating and destroying.

Carlos Alberto, beleza velho???

Ano passado o Brasil levou o slide no masculino, feminino e no speed!!!

Paz!!!

Falar menos e andar mais!!!

I LOVE YOU CURVAS!!!
