I wasn't at that race but maybe DH should leave
the ramps for a boarder(X)cross race?

Katie replied,

I vote a ramp in the fast lane, and no ramp in the slow...

Katie replied,

Im all for the ramps but here is my problem...
sooooooooo many people are already pushing their limits on a hill like cathlemet that adding a jump ramp that is mandatory just makes it straight up dangerous if they are not capable of pulling it off. I ate shit off that ramp...and i tried again and it was all good...but some poor kid or old guy that just cant put up with that is not really cool.

jump in the fast lane...open lane (and a penalty) in the slow. perhaps a handicapp at the start line

Fuck ramps. - Instead of people riding their GRADE A $600-$1200 setups, they'll just ride $200 ones because they know they get destroyed either way. Putting ramps in a longboard race is like putting a dirt jump on a Superbike GP course.

wes, the jumps at cathlamet were there just for fun. you had to take the jump just for the purpose of getting air

Jay from Portland replied,

The ramps were just fine.
You dont come into it even close to 60mph(the cops gunned us at about 40 into the intersection), and theres no way we got close to 3(vertical)feet of air.
I didnt know they were going to be there, and it was my first experience with ramps. I got schooled by the kicker the first few runs, but then it was fine.
To make the race faster, would have been nice to see the upper set of ramps a little farther out. I was put, putting around that first left when last year we had a little more speed.
Being 27, I'm young but no spring chicken. I dig the ramps, yesterday My commute was so much funner just jumping off shit.

Sharpen your teeth, or lay flat.

I think they were awesome! Yeah, i ate pavement pretty bad ...a few times.. but they were super fun and challenging and i liked that.. plus i felt accomplished when i actually made the second one during my race run :) But i am also glad that they put in a path around them for the people who were not comfortable with them. they were a surprise after all and with no warning and most of us unexperienced with ramps it was pretty gnarly. I think they should definitely keep them at cathlamet next year but engineered a little better for smooth transitions.Im not so sure how i feel about putting them in other (faster?) dh races..although it would be interesting...

Boarder's Mom replied,

For clarification, Billy was given complete autonomy over the downhill event this year, so while I knew ramps were going to be introduced, seeing them below Catastrophe was a surprise to me as well. I've wanted to add an actual boarder cross event as a separate event for a while, and with year three it may happen.
