No longboards on city roads, RCMP says

BY JAMES WELDON, NORTH SHORE NEWS MAY 14, 2011

North Vancouver RCMP wants longboarders to stay off
public roads.

The detachment issued the warning this week after
receiving what it said was a growing number of
complaints from drivers who have been worried by riders
zipping past them on the community's steep
thoroughfares.

More and more skaters are hitting the roads as the
weather warms, say police, and the result could be tragic.

"We are seeing a growth in the number of youths who are
participating in this sport," said North Vancouver RCMP
Sgt. Peter DeVries in a statement. "Longboarding offers a
positive outlet . but only if doesn't cost them their health
or their lives."

In July last year, a 27-year-old longboarder died on Mount
Seymour Road when she failed to negotiate a turn at the
intersection with Anne MacDonald Way and slammed into
a van.

Police say they are launching a ticketing blitz in the
summer in an effort to avoid a similar tragedy.

The District of North Vancouver imposes a fine of $35 on
anyone caught skating on the street in a dangerous way
or at speeds of more than 50 kilometres per hour.

I wonder how a police officer would determine if a longboarder is skating dangerously or not? It's sad that we live in this structure with growing regulations and fines for our actions. It happens slowly but our simple freedoms are taken away, and passed off as public safety in this case. But if the RCMP receieved enough complaints then they have to do there job. There's obvoiusly alot of concerned drivers out there who don't want someone "slamming" into their vehicle, But is that enough reason to keep longboarders off the road? I don't know. Has anyone considered what this would do to the longboarding industry in Vancouver if these laws were more widespread and eventualy more enforced?
