Colorado Candelas DH Race Results

posted,

Candelas Colorado Downhill December 26th Race Just
outside of Denver at the the top of a windswept icy
plateau where the plains and the Rockies converge,
the gusty winds reeled and rocked the foundations of
the earth and the mountains trembled. A gathering of
Colorado DHers huddled like penguins in hoodies
tolerating frosty gusts sheltered behind the cars that
began lining the new Parkway called Candelas.

The road, a 2.7 mile vision of land developers that was
to anchor a huge "green" developement with houses,
office parks and retail, bowed to the economic
uncertainty and was left finished but isolated. The
Parkway has more cyclists than gas snorting SUVs
rewarding Colorados diminshed Downhill scene with
seclusion, little traffic, buttery pavement and the
delivery of speed.

The Skate Gods thundered in the heavens and uttered
their voice and threw hailstones and burning logs of
fire surrounding the "Road Somewhere in Colorado"
where speed records are set, location is surrounded
by darkness and a thick canopy of clouds, yet Candelas
is open to all who seek a channel to the sea of asphalt
and speed. Google Hwy 72 and Hwy 93 in Arvada, Co.
head east 1 mile on 72 and the cutoff will be revealed.
The spot can't be blown.

On this day of GPS tailwind readings of more than 50
MPH, recently sanded pavement and gusty side winds
blowing snow and sending forth conditions like Ice
Road Truckers ,the surprising storyline was the
number of 15 years old and under signed up.

The new breed of Colorado DH kids flew swiftly on the
wings of the wind and welcomed the push of the icy
blast of a steady tailwind roaring down the face of the
front Range like spring runoff. Hoodies, denim,
halfshells and fearlessness protected them. No
leather, fullfaces, kneepads or sponsorship for these
downhillers - escaping the snares of death and
roadrash by tucking and bombing.

The Venom Van appeared and shuttled the 30 or so
racers getting supplemental shuttle help from cautious
parents.
